Lights Out events               3/8/14

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will be joining the National Lights Out events on Monday by turning all lights off (where practical) in various properties with single lights being placed in prominent positions as a mark of solemn reflection commemorating the outbreak of World War 1.

Comhairle offices at Stornoway, Tarbert, Balivanich and Castlebay are participating in this special event.

Other premises include schools, residential care homes and sports centres.

The project is being organised by 14-18 NOW, the cultural programme for the First World War Centenary Commemorations.

The inspiration for the event comes from a famous remark made on the eve of the outbreak of war by the then Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.”

Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on 4 August 1914.
