A Stornoway plane was hit by lightning during severe weather.

The Loganair flight had left Glasgow Airport on course to Lewis on Thursday afternoon.

The airline said the aircraft was inspected following the incident which caused delays to later services.

A replacement plane was despatched to the island to transport waiting passengers to the central belt.

Engineers later cleared the aircraft as safe to operate.

A Loganair spokesman said: “On Thursday, flight LM476 from Glasgow to Stornoway was struck by lightning on approach into Stornoway Airport just after 4pm.

“The landing 15 minutes later was uneventful but the aircraft required an engineering inspection before it could fly again.

“We sent up a replacement aircraft from Glasgow to operate the last return schedule.”
