Households without phone service for weeks

The plight of island BT customers who have been left waiting for repairs since lightning strikes in December has been taken up by Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil.

Many phonelines and broadband are still not re-connected.

The MP said: “I do appreciate that the lightning strike in December caused major difficulties for BT and I also appreciate that engineers have been working very hard to fix the problems.

“I have spoken to BT engineers working on this in the field, quite literally in a field, and I have been told by these experts of the difficulties in finding faults caused by lightning.”

He continued: “I have received numerous reports from people who are still waiting to have their phone lines and their broadband repairs.

“For the elderly, particularly those living alone, a phone is essential.

“Businesses are also experiencing difficulties when there are interruptions to the broadband service.

“I understand that some help has been drafted into our area,” Mr MacNeil said, adding: “but it would seem more engineers are required to find and solve these faults and I have therefore, written to Brendan Dick, Director of BT Scotland to see if anything can be done to speed up the process.”
