Lidl supermarket chain considers Stornoway       20/5/10

They may risk the wrath of the Gaelic mafia with their £24.99 polyester kilts (handy for next year’s Stornoway Royal National Mod frenzy) but budget supermarket chain Lidl is considering Stornoway as a possible site for a new store.

Its property agent’s recent scouting trip has given them some food for thought over constructing a new-build shop in the islands.

However, while there seems to be potential to introduce a Lidl supermarket to Stornoway, the German-owned corporation is busy with its current expansion drive across the UK.

On the island option, Marco Ivone, Lidl's marketing manager, said: “We are looking at opportunities for the future.”

Who knows, perhaps they may have a store open for business by the time the Mod returns to the Hebrides post 2011.
