Ex-girlfriend said she saw Liam two days after his death 14/5/13

by Grant McCabe           14/5/13

The former girlfriend of a teenage boy claimed she saw him two days after he was allegedly murdered, a court heard.

Ashley Macdonald told police that she spotted Liam Aitchison in Stornoway on November 25 2011.

But, the witness today told a jury that she had made a "mistake" about the date of the alleged sighting.

The evidence was heard at the trial of Johnathan MacKinnon and Stefan Millar at the High Court in Glasgow.

The pair - both 22 years- are charged with the murder of Mr Aitchison in Steinish on Lewis on November 23 2011.

It is claimed the 16 year-old was struck on the head and body with a knife and bottle as well having his head stamped upon.

Miss Macdonald today told how she had known Mr Aitchison for a number of years and had previously had an "on-off" relationship with him.

The 17 year-old gave a statement to police at a time when Mr Aitchison was thought missing.

She claimed that she saw Mr Aitchison while she was sitting at a bus stop in Stornoway on November 25.

Today, the teenager told the trial that it was a week earlier - the 17th or 18th - that she spotted her ex-boyfriend.

Prosecutor Iain McSporran said: "So, your police statement was an honest attempt, but it was a mistake?"

Miss MacDonald: "Yes."

Mr McSporran put to the witness that what she was now saying could be considered a "surprise."

She replied: "Yes, because my previous statement said that it was the 25th."

Mr Aitchison's body was discovered in a derelict building in Steinish on November 29 by coastguard volunteers.

MacKinnon and Millar, both of Lewis, deny murder.

The trial, before Judge Lord Kinclaven, continues.
