Jonathon Mackinnon (left) will attempt to quash his conviction at an appeal hearing. Stefan Millar (right) is waiting to see if he will also be allowed to appeal.

Appeal against murder conviction       2/5/14

An appeal hearing for one of two men found guilty of murdering Liam Aitchison is expected to be held in July, the Scottish Courts Service has confirmed.

Jonathon Mackinnon, 23, then of Plasterfield, Stornoway, was found guilty of brutally stabbing the 16-year-old to death, following a trial at Glasgow High Court last year.

He has now been granted leave to appeal. A procedural hearing is expected to be held in Edinburgh around the beginning of June as the next step in Mackinnon’s attempt to quash the conviction.

A full hearing in front of a panel of three judges in the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh is anticipated to take place this summer

No date has been set but it could be held in July.  His attempt to get his sentence reduced has been turned down.

A bid by Stefan Millar, 23, of Carloway, Lewis, who was also found guilty of the murder, to be allowed to go back to court for an appeal hearing is still being considered by a High Court judge, said the Scottish Courts Service.

Both were sentenced to life with a minimum of 18 years in jail before they will be eligible to apply for parole.
