Cosmetology students from Lews Castle College UHI held a Fairtrade awareness day as part of Fairtrade Fortnight

The event in the Pointers Drop-In Centre in Stornoway had a strong emphasis on raising awareness and educating people about what the Fairtrade Foundation stands for -better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

The students’ event also promoted the benefits of purchasing the Fairtrade range of alternative products.

Roy Macphail from Volunteering Western Isles commented: “Not only did the students learn about the principles of Fairtrade, but they also gained valuable event organisation skills which would translate well to a variety of different work environments.”

The group would like to express their thanks to Pointers, Tesco and the Stornoway Co-operative for their assistance in staging the event.
