An islander who fled the island to avoid a court appearance has been arrested.

Lewisman, Murdo MacAskill, absconded to the mainland instead of facing a drink driving allegation at Stornoway Sheriff Court last week.

A sheriff ordered his arrest and the missing 54-year-old was later traced and taken into custody.

He was flown back to the Western Isles late on Friday afternoon and a court was specially convened.

Macaskill is charged of drink driving with an alcohol breath reading of 27mcg against the 22mcg legal limit on South Beach Street, Stornoway, on 1 May.

He is also accused of driving without insurance.

Macaskill made no plea to two charges after his lawyer, Angus Macdonald requested time to check if police had followed the correct procedures.

Given his recent disappearance, honorary sheriff Iain Macleod was concerned if Macaskill would breach bail and not attend a future court.

The solicitor explained his client “simply decided he would not turn up” for the original court date but assured the sheriff Macaskill now knows he has to deal with the charges.
