Christian School is rapped over weaknesses  8/9/10

The Lewis Independent Christian School risks being struck off after its latest critical inspection report.

Scottish education minister Mike Russell will hear of inspectors’ concerns that the school has failed to improve its weaknesses over the past three years.

About 15 pupils are taught at the school which is located in a converted bungalow in Newmarket, three miles outside Stornoway.

HM inspector Anne Park criticised a lack of progress in addressing problem areas.

She highlighted: “Staff and parents have created a caring, Christian ethos in which children feel safe.”

But Ms Park stressed: “Insufficient progress has been made in addressing identified areas for improvement in the previous reports.

She reported: “Progress in bringing about improvements in establishing a broad curriculum and in addressing outstanding health and safety issues has been too slow.

Ms Park added: “The school has not yet done enough to ensure that children receive a suitably broad curriculum.

She said: “More remains to be done to ensure that all children progress at a suitable rate.”

The inspector said: “In view of the lack of progress in addressing the main points for action in the inspection report of 2007 and the follow-through report of September 2009, HMIE will now refer the report to the Registrar of Independent Schools for consideration by Scottish Ministers as to whether further action is required under the Education Scotland Act 1980.”
