A woman has died following a fatal car crash on Lewis.
She suffered serious injuries in a collision between a red-coloured Mini and a dark-blue
BMW. The crash occurred at Newmarket outside Stornoway at 3.15pm on Monday afternoon.
The Mini had careered off the road, through the top of a fence and landed in a field
below the carriageway on the A857 near to the Tong Road junction.
A male and female trapped inside the Mini were freed by Stornoway fire crews using
cutting equipment to remove its roof.
They were rushed to the accident and emergency department of the nearby Stornoway
hospital after receiving roadside treatment by ambulance personnel from Stornoway
Northern Constabulary said the woman died later from fatal injuries.
It is understood the man was flown by ambulance plane to a mainland hospital yesterday
evening. He is in a critical condition.
Flames from the engine of the BMW were extinguished by firemen using a water jet.
The BMW driver is understood to be a Newmarket resident. The young woman is believed
to have sustained a broken arm.
A police investigation into the accident is underway and a specialist traffic collision
team from Dingwall is expected to arrive on the island this morning.
A spokesman for Stornoway police said: "Enquiries continue and the A857 will remain
closed, with diversions in place, until police enquiries are concluded."
