Earlier opening for Lewis Sports Centre mooted      23/9/14

Public calls for early openings at Ionad Spors Leodhais (ISL) are being considered by the Comhairle.

It is proposed the Lewis sports centre opens at 7am, one hour earlier than usual, four days a week, during a year long trial at an additional cost of £2,600 after pool hire income.

Voluntary organisation Swim Western Isles has requested the early openings, deemed the best time to allow talented young swimmers to train before school.

In a bid to strengthen its position, the club has made a successful ‘Sportsmatch’ bid to sportscotland which matches any contribution from local businesses on a pound to pound basis.

At present ISL opens to the public at 8am. Earlier morning access is commonplace in most comparable sports centre facilities.

Two options will be considered by councillors - the first allowing 7am access to both the gym and pool facilities for the general public and Swim Western Isles.

Option two is an estimated £40 cheaper but only permits Swim Western Isles an early start in the swimming pool.

Early openings to the general public would also increase ISL revenue it is believed by enhancing the benefits of the current Slainte Mhath membership scheme and the delivery of additional early morning classes.
