Sex offender is “danger to young girls”                 12/2/14

A Western Isles sex offender has been branded a “danger to young people” by an island sheriff.

Daniel Macrury, of Lewis but whose address was given as Flat 14, Cale House, Millburn Street, Inverness, has been jailed for a total of three years and ten months.

He previously admitted two charges involving unlawful sexual acts with a girl aged between 13 and 15 years. The girl had been drinking. The offences occurred on various occasions between November and early December 2012.

The 26-year-old also accepted he sent a young girl indecent photos of his private parts.

His not guilty pleas to a number of similar charges had been accepted.

He also pleaded guilty to buying a litre bottle of vodka for an underage girl from a Stornoway supermarket in February last year.

Procurator fiscal David Teale told the court she shared it with friends. One became “violating ill, vomiting, and had to be taken to hospital.”

At Stornoway Sheriff Court on Wednesday Macrury was jailed for three years and ten months for the sex charges.

A further four months was imposed for the underage alcohol offence.

In addition, he will remain on licence for one year after his full prison term is up.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinately.

Sheriff David Sutherland stressed: These are very serious offences. The courts - indeed society - has a duty to protect young people at such a vulnerable stage of their development.”

The offences were exacerbated by Macrury “providing her with alcohol with the result her inhibitions were lessened.”

Sheriff Sutherland stressed: “The young girl was not to blame.”

He was “appalled” at Macrury’s stance that the girl was partly at fault.

The sheriff said it shows “you have no understanding or empathy for the victim.“

He criticised Macrury for buying vodka for an underage girl.

He said: “Again, it is a situation where you have brought drink for young girls - one who, as a result, had to be taken to A&E.

“You are a danger to young people and can only be dealt with by a custodial sentence.“
