A Stornoway man has died in a tragic accident in Thailand.

Merchant seaman, Iain Mackay, of Melbost, outside Stornoway, was taken to hospital in Hua Hin, some 125 miles south of the country’s capital, Bangkok.

The 40-year-old was on leave from his job as an engineer on a seismic survey ship, which was believed to be working around the Indian Ocean area.

It is understood Mr Mackay suffered a severe injury from a shard off a glass panel.

He lost so much blood that he passed away in the ambulance on route to hospital, late on Thursday evening (UK time). Thailand is six hours ahead of BST.

Thai police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Mackay’s body is being repatriated to Lewis.
