Hundreds of children have participated in the local Lewis Mòd.

Children from numerous schools across the island descended on Stornoway with nearly 40 competitions in Gaelic singing, music, literature and drama taking place over four days.

Lewis Mod convenor Amy Macaulay was impressed with the dedicated efforts and huge talent of so many young competitors.

She said: “It went very well with a nice atmosphere. We are really pleased with it.”

She added: “We took in a new competition for previous prizewinners to allow children who had already won the traditional medal and the silver pendant to be able to compete again if they wanted to.

“Three of them did and they were excellent with the winner being Koren Pickering.”

Drama events saw an upsurge this year to the delight of organisers.

Mrs Macaulay said: “One of the highlights was having more plays this year than usual. For the first time there were three secondary school plays which was excellent to see. Very often there is only one entry.

“To see the children so enthusiastic was fantastic. They were great and you could tell they really enjoyed it.“

For the younger children, there were 14 primary school groups going on stage to perform plays.

Mary Sophia Morrison of Laxdale School took home a clutch of silverware for solo singing.

The eight-year-old was unaware she had also won the Western Isles Council trophy for being the star turn at the prizewinner's concert, having left before the late finish.
