Friday 3rd April saw the penultimate league games of the 2014/15 season. Rangers
Club A played host to Sea Angling A. The Sea Angling team secured their 5th successive
league title with one game still left to play after beating the home side 6 – 2.
Ewen MacLean opened for the Rangers Club as he played Alex Keiller. Alex (2 x 140,
125, 3 x 100) took the first win of the evening by beating Ewen (125) 3 – 0. Andy
Dowie made a rare appearance in a league game on his visit to the island from England
to appear for the Rangers Club to play Willie Reid. Andy (140, 3 x 100) beat Willie
(137) 3 – 1 to level the match score. This was after Willie had won the first leg.
The Rangers Club then had Stephen O’Donnell play Murdo Alex. Murdo (2 x 140, 125,
4 x 100) beat Stephen (140, 123, 2 x 100) 3 – 1 to regain the lead for the Sea Angling
Club. Kenny “Nini” MacLeod then stepped to the oche for the Rangers Club to face
Rory.
Rory (2 x 125, 6 x 100) increased the Sea Angling Club’s lead to 3 – 1 by beating
Nini (3 x 133)3 – 1. The final singles game saw Ian “Bananas” O’Donnell play Jim.
Jim (2 x 100) ensured that the best the Rangers Club could hope for would be a draw
by beating Bananas (2 x 140, 134, 2 x 100) with another 3 – 1 win.
The triples game
saw Stephen, Andy (140, 100) and Ewen play Murdo Alex (100), Alex K. and Rory (100).
Rory’s D4 checkout put the match score to 5 – 1 and ensured a fifth consecutive league
title for the Sea Angling A team under the captaincy of Alex “Painter” Murray.
The first doubles game had Bananas (2 x 100) and Nini (123) play Murdo Alex (2 x
100) and Alex K. (140, 100). Alex put the match score to 6 – 1 with his D4 finish.
The matches’ final game had, for the Rangers Club, Stephen and Andy (102, 2 x 100)
who played Jim and Rory. Andy pulled a game back for the Rangers Club and showed
the English air\beer must agree with him with a checkout of 102, hitting T20, 10
and D16 to get it. This was a relatively high scoring match with 55 score of 100
or more.
The match between the Golf Club and Sea Angling B was postponed. I am unaware
of the reason for this.
Friday evening also saw the Sparrows visit the Star. Ryan
was the first player from the Star on the oche where he faced Calum Ruddy. Calum
(100) put the Sparrows into an early lead after beating Ryan (121) 3 – 0. Mark was
next up for the Star when he played Amanda Campbell. Mark (125, 100) levelled the
match score after beating Amanda 3 – 0. The next game scheduled to be played in this
match was Gordon against Mairianne MacIver, but it would appear that Mairianne failed
to attend so the point went to Gordon. That put the Star 1 point in front. Jamie
was the next Star player to step forward to play Finlay MacIver. Finlay (180, 140,
125, 100) levelled the match score for the Sparrows by beating Jamie (140, 119,100)
3 1 with Finlay’s max 180 coming in the second leg. Jamie won leg 3 with a 98 finish.
This matches’ final singles game had the Star’s Don play Scott MacLeod. Scott (140,
120, 5 x 100) made the match score 3 – 2 to the Sparrows after beating Don (6 x 100)
3 – 2 after Don had won the first two legs.
The triples had Don (140), Mark (135, 122) and substitute Blackie play Finlay, Scott
and Calum Ruddy (137). Blackie’s D9 checkout saw the match score all square again.
The first doubles game had Jamie and Blackie for the Star play Calum and Scott (121).
Calum’s D10 finish put the Sparrows back in front. The evening’s final game had the
Star’s Don and Gordon play Finlay (121) and Amanda. Finlay made for a final match
score of 5 – 3 to the Sparrows with his D10 finish.
Friday’s other game had The Carlton
host Rangers Club B. Kay was The Carlton’s first player to step forward when she
faced Calum. Calum (120, 101,100) gave the B team an early lead after beating Kay
3 – 1. The Carlton then had Donnie Heareach on the oche where he faced Gordy Mopp.
Gordy (140, 125) gave the B team a two point lead after beating the Heareach 3 –
0. Neil Clayden was The Carlton’s third player of the evening to take to the oche
where he played Innes. Innes (140, 123, 2 x 100)put the B team 3 points up after
beating Neil (125, 100) 3 – 1. The Carlton then had myself, John Norman Murray, play
Ross. The Carlton’s evening did not improve as Ross (2 x 100) beat John Norman (140,
107) with yet another 3 – 1 win. Ross managed a finish of 81 by hitting 19, T10 and
D16 in the second leg. The final singles game had Ruaraidh for The Carlton play Murdo.
The misery continued for The Carlton as Murdo (5 x 100) bear Ruaraidh 3 – 0.
The triples game had, for The Carlton, Kay, Neil and John Norman play Gordy, substitute
Derek and Murdo (125). Gordy’s D2 finish put the match score to 6 – 0 to the B team.
The first doubles game had John Norman (121) and the Heareach play Ross and Derek.
Ross made the match score 7 – 0 with his D8 checkout. The final game had Ruaraidh
and Neil play Murdo (132) and Innes. The big question was could The Carlton avoid
a second consecutive whitewash? Murdo’s D5 finish showed the answer to be a resounding
“NO”.
