Despite the rain, islanders turned out in force for the annual Lewis Carnival procession.

Hundreds of spectators lined the streets as the parade of colourful lorries and people of all ages in fancy dress wound its way through Stornoway town centre on Saturday.

The miserable weather depleted the crowd at the stalls and attractions at South Beach with many children's activities like the bouncy castle too wet for most.

The covered rides at the adjacent fair were popular and the smaller queues than normal meant a shorter wait.

Cash raised from the carnival will be split among a range of local charities.

Lewis Carnival committee chairperson, Janet Macdonald, said: "Despite the typical Hebridean weather everyone made such an effort.

"The public, helpers, volunteers and the carnival committee all pulled together and that is what the carnival is all about.

"And we'll be back to do it again next year, hopefully with the continued support of locals."
