Thousands of people lined the streets of Stornoway to watch the Lewis Carnival procession wind its way through the town on Saturday afternoon.

Torrential rain ease off in time for two pipebands to lead the parade of colourful floats plus children and adults in fancy dress.

The noisy procession took nearly an hour to cover the mile distance into the town centre where fete stalls, children activities and a funfair continued until around 4.30pm.

Cash from a street collection and stalls will be distributed to local charities and good causes.

Gemma Malcolm, secretary of the Lewis Carnival committee, said: “We were absolutely relieved the rain stopped and the sun came out.

“We feared there would be no turnout at all when there was a heavy downpour as we were setting up in the morning.

“But the clouds parted just in time for the floats coming in.”

Overall, it was a “fantastic turnout with another successful year. Everything went smoothly and it all ran to time.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and the committee had a ball organising it.”

The overall float winner was the Stornoway Running Club with their HS2 Fort William to Stornoway train theme.

Best dressed was the Mac Ferries - Row your Own with Sail Stornoway’s Mad Hatter’s tea party winning the most original idea prize.

Live action from DR Macleod’s haulage lorry drivers was the top amusing float while building firm, Neil Mackay, won the best youth category.
