A landslip has blocked a road in South Harris.

Loosened by a deluge of rain, a pile of mud, stones, and debris tumbled down the hillside onto the single track Loch Langavat road which runs between Finsbay - on the east coast of the island - to Leverburgh.

A local lifeboat crewman was prevented from reaching the lifeboat heading out on an emergency mission at 7am as the route was impassable.

Roadblocks have been set up and until the landslip is cleared villagers have to take a detour south via Rodel.

Chris Ross who runs the Butty Bus takeaway at the Leverburgh ferry pier could not get past and was delayed in getting to work.

Mr Ross said: “It is a pretty severe landslip. There is no way in the world you could get through. There has been nothing like this here in living memory.”
