Video: Submerged Landrover pulled out of the sea 3/5/14
RNLI video: The volunteer crew of Stornoway's all-weather lifeboat, Tom Sanderson,
assists coastguards and fire rescue teams to retrieve the vehicle.
A Land Rover which was bashed about by the waves after getting stuck on an island
beach has been recovered.
A major rescue was sparked after the empty vehicle was found in the sea below cliffs
in North Tolsta, Lewis.
Fears that lives were in danger arose when a jacket was discovered by the submerged
4x4.
Three volunteer coastguard teams rushed to the scene at Cladach beach after a passer-by
raised the alarm on Tuesday evening.
Stornoway lifeboat searched the coast for any missing people and the rescue helicopter
swept the area.
Fires crews and coastguard cliff teams also assisted.
It was later discovered the empty vehicle had got stuck in the sand when the owners
launched a boat a few hours earlier. They sailed southward to Brevig intending to
return for the Landrover.
But the tide came in and toppled the Land Rover upside down. It flooded with salt
water and is now a write-off.
Emergency services personnel harnessed ropes around the vehicle and pulled it above
the high tide mark.
