Island community and environmental projects are invited to apply for funding through a Western Isles based organisation.

Third Sector Hebrides (TSH) is now one of 14 bodies in Scotland which administer the new Scottish Landfill Communities Fund (SLCF).

Landfill site operators pay contributions - which are linked to the Scottish Landfill Tax - into the fund. The money is passed on as grants to community and environmental projects.

THS is holding an information session about the fund in its Stornoway office on Wednesday 5 October.

A spokeswoman said the drop in day is "to promote the fund within the local community as it’s a ‘use it or lose it’ pot of money."

She added: "There is a limited time in which we can keep it if it’s not distributed.

Funding scheme for community and environmental projects

7 September 2016

Community group anywhere in Scotland can apply to TSH for cash as all approved bodies must give equal consideration to any project, regardless of location.

Suitable projects include restoring land to for economic, social or environmental use, community based recycling and waste prevention projects.

Providing financial, administration and similar services to projects that are enrolled with a landfill community fund approved body will also be considered.

Some projects have to be based within ten miles of a landfill site or transfer station such as funding for a public amenity,  historic or architectural site or conservation of a natural habitat.
