Labour restarts Western Isles candidate ballot    21/10/10

The Labour Party has been forced to scrap a ballot for a Western Isles candidate for next year’s Scottish Parliament elections.

A last minute halt was called to the process which was due to announce a candidate today. A completely fresh contest is takes place next month.

Peter Clarke, London and Uist; Callum Ian Macmillan, Stornoway and Kevin Paterson, North Lochs, were competing in the race.

It is understood that Mr Macmillan was unwell and unable to address island party members at selection meetings arranged to be held in Uist and Stornoway on Monday and Tuesday. Voting was to take place last night (wed).

A Western Isles Labour spokesperson said advice was sought from the party’s Scottish HQ.

He said: “We have been advised by John Smith House - that due to technicalities - that we re-schedule the timetable.”

He added: “The process will be re-started shortly and a candidate is hoped to be in place by the end of the year.”

The field is now open for other hopefuls to throw their hats into the ring as the fresh process will start from scratch.

After nominees are received, another three week selection contest will kick off in November.
