Sir,

The letter from WA Johnston (6th May) plainly sums up the Labour Party. As much as they might try fooling the people by associating themselves with Keir Hardie it will have little effect. There is one thing for sure, he would never had been associated with such a Tory principled organisation like New Labour.

How many Labour councillors have opposed paying the living wage which would take many families out of poverty ? In January, Labour MPs voted for further massive austerity cuts where the most vulnerable will make the biggest sacrifice.

Only the Labour Party would have you believe that these are the policies that Keir Hardie would support. When I read letters from Labour politicians it is obvious that they do not understand the economic levers associated with poverty or the problems it brings.

When Labour-minded people see other partys’ politicians who have caused an economic mess and social injustice as an icon of a model MP it shows how far removed Labour are from reality. We shouldn't forget that the Labour Party helped accelerate the widening of the gap between rich and poor.

The Labour Party has more in common with the Conservatives than ordinary people.
