Sir,

Mr MacKinnon's letter of 24th January makes it clear that the Labour Party have learned nothing from their two shattering general election defeats. They were defeated because their bank de-regulation and high-tax policies were responsible for the economic meltdown of 2008, leading to the creation of a deficit which has reached £1,542 billion, or £25,300 for every man woman and child in Britain.

Throughout Labour's thirteen years in power, our services declined while our taxes went up, and nobody knows where the money went. And now, yet again, they want to increase the rates of income tax and council tax. They want to tax hard working people to pay for Gordon Brown's bungling incompetence, and then pour our money down the drain.

The Comhairle, dominated by Labour councillors and "independent" councillors who are members of the Labour Party, are pleading poverty. Perhaps they should ask a Labour councillor who has attended only 15 committee meetings since the beginning of 2014 and pocketed nearly £45,000 of salary and expenses, to justify an income of perhaps £1,500 an hour while many hard-working council staff are getting barely £8 an hour.
