Sirs,

The Labour Party's 1p tax increase proposal can now be seen in its true light, because the lowest paid will be the hardest hit. Their U-turn on abandoning the impractical rebate for low earners will leave these hard working people substantially worse off. It says little for the Labour Party's knowledge of devolved powers to Holyrood, because they were continually advised that it was illegal to provide rebates of this nature.

The Labour Party not only oppose the SNP's proposal to reduce airport duty, they want to increase it. They tell us that all air travellers are wealthy and that they can afford to pay higher airport taxes. Obviously they believe the majority of the people living in the Western Isles are wealthy. The Labour Party appear to be living in the past. Air travel is no longer considered a luxury, but a necessary modern form of transport.

An increase in air duty will be an additional tax on islanders and have a detrimental affect upon our economy. It will reduce outside investment and damage the tourist sector.
