Sir,

Again it seems the Comhairle has acted with reckless abandon, totally ignoring the demands of the people whom they claim to represent, by voting to close Lionel school.

It has come as no surprise to some, as far back as two years ago, people could see this day coming, by reducing the catchment area, and removing key roles, it is clear that the situation was being manipulated in the worst way possible; to achieve its end goal of slamming shut the doors on another local school.

What schools are next in the crosshairs of the Comhairle? Should the parents of children who live in the Broadbay area be worried? We have already had the council leader openly saying that he wants the excellent school of Laxdale to disappear and be gobbled up by a Stornoway School, so nowhere, it seems, is safe.

It was also very sad to see leading Labour lights - Donald Crichton, Angus McCormack, Ronnie MacKinnon all voting to close the school, indeed, even former Labour parliamentary hopeful Norman MacDonald voting twice to close it.

It also needs to be known - what exactly is the Labour candidate Alasdair Morrison’s stance on the closure of Lionel school? Does he condemn it? So far his stony silence is very worrying; perhaps even an admission of guilt.

While the MP and MSP and the SNP council group are in unanimity in calling, acting and voting not to close local schools, It’s a shame that he could not persuade just one Labour councillor to stand up for the community, and vote to keep one local school open.
