One the largest multinational military exercises of its kind in Europe is set to begin.

 

Thirty-nine naval units from 13 nations are taking part in Exercise Joint Warrior from this weekend until 4 May.

 

Mock sea battles will take place in the Minch.

 

Activity includes vessels from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US.

 

They will practice submarine attacks, anti-surface warfare and air defences.

 

Stornoway Airport is to be a base for international air forces as they simulate bombing Cape Wrath weapons range.

 

Aircraft from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, the UK and the US will be involved. RAF Lossiemouth and Prestwick Airport will also be used.

 

Warships are already sailing through the Minch to gather at the naval base in Kyle as well as on the Clyde.
