The event, which is open to all, will take place on Monday.

Public gathering in Stornoway to honour Jo Cox

18 June 2016

The gathering will "remember and pay tribute" to the politician who was killed while on her way to hold a constituency surgery.

People wishing to attend are asked to assemble at Perceval Square at 1pm for a 1.15pm start, said organisers, the Western Isles Labour Party.

A spokesperson said: "Everyone, of whatever political persuasion, and of none, is very welcome to join the local Labour Party for a short period of reflection."

Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed while on her way to hold a constituency surgery in Bristall, near Leeds.

A 52-year-old man charged with her murder responded with "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" when asked to give his name at a brief hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London.

Thomas Mair, from Birstall, also refused to give the court his age and address.

Mair is charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

The case was continued without a plea and Mair was remanded in custody. He is due to appear in court again on Monday.

A 77-year-old man who went to Mrs Cox's aid is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed.

Mrs Cox's family and friends have set up a fundraising page for charities in her memory. Donations to www.gofundme.com/jocox will be split to causes "closest to her heart": The Royal Voluntary Service, HOPE not hate, and The White Helmets.

Over £472,000 has been pledged since the page was set up on Friday.

Meanwhile, MPs from rival parties want to break with convention and sit together in solidarity and honour of Mrs Cox when Parliament is recalled on Monday.

Conservative MP, Jason McCartney, has written to the Speaker of the House of Commons.

His letter said: “MPs of all parties are united in grief and admiration for Jo. Would it please be possible and break with tradition and for MPs to mix cross party on the benches on Monday to show we are united in fighting hatred?”
