Jail for islander who extorted cash          12/10/14

An islander who frightened another man and extorted £60 off him has been jailed.

Alistair Macaulay, 32, of 6 Druim nan Currag, Callanish, Lewis, pleaded guilty to meancing his victim and stealing the cash by threat.

Procurator fiscal David Teale told Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday (FRI) that the incident occurred the town’s Macaulay Road Co-op carpark at 1pm on 3 June when Macaulay demanded the money.

His victim refused but Macaulay removed a wallet from the man’s pocket and just took the notes.

Mr Teale said the victim was too frightened to object.

Lawyer Katy Begg said the crime would not have happened if her client had not taken so much drink and drugs.

Sheriff David Sutherland sentenced him to eight months in prison.
