The Western Isles Conservatives have expressed their delight in securing its best result in an election campaign in the islands for 14 years.

Some 1,215 islanders voted for Tory candidate in Thursday’s general election.

Despite the huge upsurge for the SNP, it was twice the 647 votes the party received last time.

The isles’ Conservatives gained third spot locally - a significant morale booster considering they came in last in the 2010 election.

Western Isles Conservative Association chairman A.R. Fraser said: “We would like to convey our thanks to everyone in the Western Isles who voted Conservative on Thursday.

“This saw our association double its vote and is a huge encouragement to our local membership.

“We are aware that many Conservatives in the isles vote tactically as a first preference, after this result and a further rise in our membership during the past four weeks, we are hopeful that for next year’s Scottish elections we will see more gains.”

Mr Fraser added: “I personally would like to convey my gratitude to those who volunteered their services to the association the length and breadth of the Western Isles during the campaign.

“I would also like to thank Malcolm Burr and his staff for the efficient manner the count was conducted in.”

“We also would like to express our thanks to all who called in to see us at our election office on Point Street and to those who made a donation to our fighting fund.”

He continued: “Our best wishes are extended to Angus Brendan MacNeil on his re-election as MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar and we are confident that the newly elected Conservative Government will serve the people of Scotland
and all parts of the United Kingdom well.
