The chief officer of health and social care, with the local authority organisation, COSLA, has been hired to head a new Western Isles body.

Dr Ron Culley has been appointed as the inaugural chief officer of Health and Social Care of the Western Isles.

The post was created to provide overall strategic leadership to an integrated joint board in delivering health and social care services within the Western Isles.

The aim of the body is to have services working together to give the best care based on a person’s personal circumstances.

This could be making sure that care services know what help somebody needs in their home when they leave hospital.

Another objective is to avoid people being sent to hospital or staying in hospital too long when it would be better for them to get care at home.

At times the present system is ineffective if people get the same service twice - from the NHS and the council’s social care department.

Mr Culley said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this challenging post and look forward to moving to the Western Isles with my family.

“Health and Social Care Integration is a major change in providing services but ultimately it is about improving those services for communities. I am committed to delivering that aim, working with partner agencies and other organisations for the benefit of the Western Isles.”

Mr Culley and his wife Lisa have two children, Arran,6, and two-year-old Eilidh.  He will take up the post over the summer.
