Islander possessed items stolen from dead neighbour’s home       4/6/14

A range of stolen goods mysteriously appeared on the doorstep of an island householder, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday.

The items were taken between November 2012 and January 2013 out of a neighbour’s house which was lying empty after its elderly lady owner died.

The lawyer for John Macleod of 40 Plasterfield, Stornoway, said he did not steal anything but found them outside his door and he took them inside.

The 51-year-old pleaded guilty to resetting the items.

The solicitor said it was not uncommon for wellwishers to leave “stuff including food” at his door.

Sheriff David Sutherland queried if that often included “a TV, remote control, nest of tables and a clock” as in this case.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said police acted on a tip-off and searched his house.

Macleod was also sentenced for uttering a racist remark and threatening behaviour after being verbally abused by children in September last year. He was previously convicted of the offence after trial

Macleod was sentenced to a total of eight months in jail - four months for each offence.
