Islander carried out alleged indecent assault in van, trial is told      14/6/14

An elderly islander “fondled and groped” two girls after giving them a lift a trial heard on Friday.

Donald Macneil, 81, of Burnside, Daliburgh, denies a raft of sexual accusations against a number of women and girls dating between the 1970s and 2011.

Giving evidence, one alleged victim said Macneil gave her and another female a lift on more than one occasion.

They would bunch up in the front seat of the van he was driving and he would touch indecently whichever one was next to him, she maintained.

Defence QC Derek Ogg said the woman had told police it felt like Macneil was tickling them and they were “screaming and giggling.”

He said: “I put it to you that was all he was doing - if he was doing anything at all.”

The witness indicated Macneil touched her in inappropriate places.

She said: “We were shocked. He wasn’t tickling us. I want to make that quite clear.”

The QC said: “You are re-interpreting this through the lens of time.”

He added: “You didn’t feel at the time you were being sexually abused.”

“We didn’t know what that was,” the witness replied.

The woman said they never told anyone about the incidents as they felt they would not be believed.

Mr Ogg suggested said she had never thought nothing about the alleged incidents all her life.

“That’s not true. It’s always been there,” replied the witness.
