Allan urges fair deal for island renewables      12/11/13

SNP MSP Alasdair Allan, has today warned the UK Government that renewable energy in the islands will only be viable if the ‘strike price’ for energy recognises local costs.

Dr Allan was speaking ahead of decisions due to be made over whether the strike price should be set at different levels in Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.

Alasdair Allan commented: “The principal has now been accepted that renewable energy in the islands has to be sold to the national grid at a price that reflects the cost of production in island areas.

“What the UK Government has been less clear on, however, is whether they understand that these costs are likely to be very different from island to island. UK Energy Secretary, Ed Davey, who is due to make public local strike prices soon, must recognise this point and ensure that island specific prices are set.

“Along with the Scottish Government and the Comhairle I have contacted Ed Davey seeking assurances that the price set for the Western Isles will be a realistic one. A great deal hinges on this decision and I hope that the voice of the Western Isles will be heard on this matter.”
