Ishbel steps over £15,000 milestone in fundraising challenge

22 April 2024

Lewis woman Ishbel Macleod has been praised for her “inspiring” dedicated efforts along with her husband, Duncan, to raise over £15,000 for cancer research.

This is the fourth year she has taken part in the annual Walk All Over Cancer Challenge which requires you to walk 10,000 steps a day over the month of March.

As Ishbel says on her Cancer Research Giving page, “This year however, the challenge has personal poignancy as my sister was diagnosed with cancer but thanks to research is responding well to treatment.

“However, our dear friend Christine Carrick lost her life to this cruel disease after a diagnosis of only four weeks.”

Many people find the step challenge difficult and time-consuming.

Ishbel faced another disadvantage with her eyesight deteriorating steadily in recent years. She is now registered blind but doesn't let that hold her back, and gets out and about for her daily walks with her husband, Duncan, regardless of the weather.

The Isle of Lewis Committee of Cancer Research UK say they are “so inspired and appreciative” of Ishbel and Duncan’s dedication and fundraising efforts.

Ishbel raised an amazing £4,611 when she first embarked on the challenge in 2021.

Her total has now reached £15,007 including gift aid since she took that first step.

The couple are retired teachers. Both were based at Sandwickhill Primary when they married. Duncan transferred to Sir E Scott in Tarbert until the late nineties.

Ishbel returned to Sandwickhill to teach Gaelic medium classes.

They have two daughters - Katie who works as a teacher and Anne who is a doctor.
