Investigation into Stornoway explosion         12/8/14

An investigation has been launched into an explosion which injured two men at Stornoway harbour.

One was thrown off the pier and into the water. A machinery unit was lifted off the ground and landedon the other person’s foot.

The casualties were treated in hospital following the blast on Monday.

The pair were workers at the new under-construction extension jetty, at the outer end of the ferry pier.  It is believed they were using compressed machinery at the time.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) say they have not been notified of the incident and will now make their own inquiries.

Contractor BAM Nuttall has also launched an internal probe into the incident.
