A fisherman has been injured on a local prawn trawler.

The man is believed to have sustained head injuries.

Stornoway coastguard said they were alerted to the incident via a vhf radio call.

The rescue helicopter at Stornoway was mobilised and the island lifeboat sped to the scene some 12 miles south east of Stornoway at 4.15pm this afternoon.

A coastguard coastal rescue team was also summoned to man a landing site.

Original reports from coastguards suggested the casualty was airlifted to Stornoway airport by helicopter.

It appears the fisherman was taken ashore by lifeboat.
