A fisherman lost the top of a finger after it was trapped in heavy gear in an accident at sea.

The 42-year-old Portuguese national was working on deck onboard the German-flagged FVJan Maria when his hand was caught by a metal trawl door.

The vessel was 40 miles off the west coast of Lewis.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter winched the casualty off the deep sea trawler and flew him for urgent treatment at the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway on Saturday.

The injured man was later discharged into the care of Stornoway Fishermen's Mission.

Mission Port Officer Finlay Macleod found accommodation for the fisherman and also arranged his repatriation to his home in Germany.
