An new independent dentist is to open in Stornoway early next year.

There has been no independent dentist in Lewis since Robert Purvis shut the practice he took over from Mr Kenneth Macdonald in 2014.

NHS Western Isles said it has now accepted an application to establish a new three surgery dental practice in the centre of Stornoway.

It will register a minimum of 4,500 new NHS dental patients.

People previously registered with the dental practice at the Western Isles Dental Centre can apply for registration at the new practice.

This new dental surgery will be NHS committed but will also offer patients private treatments.

Until it opens its premises, NHS Western Isles is looking at leasing accommodation to the dental practice at the Western Isles Dental Centre in Stornoway to allow NHS dental treatment to be provided.

The health board's public dental service will continue to provide daily in-hours and out-of-hours dental treatment.
