Sirs,

In response to Angus Macdonald (Letters 29th July), it appears he has no understanding of how a commercial business operates in the UK.

Flights to and from these islands are provided by a commercial airline which has the legal right to set its own tariffs. Our elected members have no control over the fares, and the airline could simply walk away if it failed to make an adequate return on its operations.

The Scottish Government has recently enhanced the air discount scheme to assist islanders. As for inter-island flights, our local Labour minded council scrapped its subsidy four years ago, resulting in a greatly reduced service.

Mr Blair stands accused of not only lying to Parliament, but of lying to the country and taking us into an illegal, immoral and costly war. Our national security is at extreme risk partly due to his irresponsible decision making. We are still paying for this cost of this war which has contributed massively to the UK debt of £1.7 trillion.

Maybe Mr Macdonald would like to tell the families of our military personnel that the loss of their loved ones or those who have been badly maimed that it is not too important because the man who sent them there did it for reasons of little justification.

Blair sent our military  to Iraqi and Afghanistan poorly equipped for the task, and still refuses to admit he got it badly wrong. And what about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have died. Do they not matter?
