A severe weather warning of ice has been issued for the Western Isles.

Falling temperatures and wintry showers are expected from late Sunday night into Monday morning.

Showers is likely to fall on the Harris hills.

The Met Office severe warning officially covers Lewis and Harris.

However, local conditions mean that icy patches may also affect stretches of roads and paths in Uist, Benbecula and Barra.

The Met Office warning said: “Cold air will spread in across the north of the UK by Sunday evening allowing many road temperatures to fall below zero overnight.

“As wintry showers move in from the northwest, icy stretches are liable to form on any untreated roads.

“These showers will fall as snow in places with the potential for overnight localised accumulations of 1-2cm at lower levels and 2-5cm over some of the highest routes.

“The public should be aware of the potential for hazardous driving conditions, though the risk will decrease quickly on Tuesday morning as temperatures rise again.
