Hebrides News

Sirs,

I read in “Hebrides News,” 15th April, of the buyout of the Barvas Estate by the local community and noted with utter disbelief councillor Angus Campbell’s statement: “I must say, once again, that it is great that we are seeing more and more of the land being brought back to the people of our islands.”

Our leader is obviously suffering from a severe case of selective amnesia. Need I remind him and the electorate of the islands that he has led a project that has handed over the most iconic asset that the people of these islands-owned, Lews Castle, to a multinational company, Natural Retreats, with hitherto no links to the islands?

Oh, and let us not forget the £7,500,000 of public funds handed over too. All this, and by the Comhairle’s own admission, to the detriment of existing Lewis businesses and local jobs.

The level of hypocrisy expressed by our leader is truly amazing.
