Alternative projects to deliver fast broadband to Hushinish are being investigated after the area was missed out in the fibre optic roll-out.

Development agency HIE, which is running the Digital Highlands and Islands initiative, says there were never any plans to lay a broadband cable overland to the North Harris district.

Running a cable in a proposed water mains trench was ruled out in the past - thus halting the Scottish Water pipeline has no bearing on the future provision of broadband in the area.

A HIE spokesperson said: “There are areas we can’t reach with the current roll-out. Primarily these are places with small numbers and scattered homes.

“There was a proposal some time ago suggesting laying fibre with the Hushinish pipe, but it was not a viable option for the project.”

Scottih Water said there was no plan to lay a fibre optic cable as part of its Hushinish upgrade.
