Stormy seas and heavy rain will accompany the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo as it runs eastwards across the Atlantic, arriving in the Hebrides from Monday night.

The Met Office issued a weather warning of high winds to affect the Western Isles on Tuesday.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Whilst Monday night will see wet and windy conditions sweeping eastwards, the strongest winds are expected as the rain clears eastwards and winds veer northwesterly through Tuesday morning.”

60 to 70 mph gusts are expected in exposed coastal areas.

The Met Office said some uncertainty remains in the storm’s track and intensity, but there remains the “potential for localised disruption to travel, especially as the strongest winds will coincide with rush hour in places.”

Gonzalo hit Bermuda as a Category 2 storm on Friday causing flooding and widespread damage on Friday.

Fierce winds over 110mph knocked down powerlines leaving around 55,000 people without heat or light. Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll, and her 180-strong crew has arrived in Bermuda to help with the storm recovery efforts.
