Hurricane Gonzalo heading for Western Isles        18/10/14

Strong winds with thundery showers are expected to affect the Western Isles on Sunday.

A southerly force eight gale gusting over 50 mph is due in the early hours of Sunday.

High winds and rough seas will continue as the band of low pressure passes over the Hebrides.

By dawn the wind direction will change to come from the west and will be stronger in South Uist and Barra.

On Tuesday, another phase of bad weather from the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo is due to blast the west coast of Scotland.

Widespread ferry cancellations can be expected if the ex-hurricane maintains its present track across the Atlantic.

Gonzalo left tens of thousands without power when it slammed into Bermuda on Saturday.

It will weaken as it crosses the ocean. At present the eye of the storm is predicted to be centred over the Western Isles at midnight Monday going into Tuesday.
