Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of island councillor, Iain Morrison.

Mr Morrison, who represented the Westside and Ness ward died on Friday, aged 60 years. He had been a councillor since 1999.

Despite his illness with cancer, Mr Morrison continued to be involved with representing the community.

He was determined to vote against the closure of Lionel secondary school in Ness and twice took a break from chemotherapy treatment in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to make his arguments via video link.

Recently, he launched a fundraising drive to provide accuvein scanners - which locates veins for inserting needles for medical treatment - for nursing districts across the Western Isles.

Nurses had difficulty in finding his veins for blood samples or insert a drip but he found the efficiency of the specialist equipment “amazing."

In the first few weeks of fundraising so far, one machine - costing £3000 - has been provided for the chemotherapy department at Western Isles Hospital and another at the Westside GP surgery which cared for Mr Morrison.

Around 650 mourners attended a funeral service at Barvas Free Church on Monday.

Later, a traditional Hebridean funeral procession wound its way for about half mile, with each man taking a lift of the bier, before the burial at Barvas cemetery.

Mr Morrison is survived by his wife Annette, his mother, brother and sisters.

Along with his brother, Calum, Mr Morrison ran family bus firm Galson Motors and also drove coaches taking tourists sightseeing around Lewis.

In his younger years, he played football for Westside FC and had also turned out for Ness FC and for Stornoway United.

He also holds the distinction of playing for two different teams on the same night, possibly the only footballer in Lewis to have done so. He took the field for Westside for the first 45 minutes at Barvas with a speedy drive into the neighbouring district to put on a Ness shirt.

Mr Morrison was the former chairman of the Western Isles Island Games Association - formed to enable local athletes to participate in the biennial International Island Games.

Norman Macdonald, convenor of Western Isles Council said: “Our thoughts are with Annette and the family at this very sad time. The number of people who turned out at both the wake and the funeral services was testament to Iain’s influence in the community and further afield.

“Iain was a man who cared greatly for these islands and particularly for the community which he represented.

He was a very active participant in all of the council procedures and was an integral part of several community groups including the Western Isles Island Games Committee, the Westside Young at Heart Group, the Westside Football Club and the Barvas War Memorial Committee.

Mr Macdonald added: “A couple of weeks ago Iain and I discussed the possibility of a sponsored cycle from Stornoway to Uig which I had hoped to complete - something which he was very enthusiastic about. I will now pursue that over the coming weeks in aid of this worthwhile cause.”
