Islander in court over alleged human trafficking charges           1/8/14

A Western Isles fishing boat skipper has appeared in court charged with human trafficking allegations.

Alexander Murdo Murray, the owner of the MFV Astra III, is accused of trafficking three Ghanaian nationals for exploitation.

It is alleged 48-year-old of 12 Upper Bayble, Point, Lewis, arranged their travel into the UK with the intent to exploit them.

It is claimed the alleged incidents occurred at different harbours on the Minch and west coast between November 2013 and March this year.

Murray also faces charges over the safety of his Stornoway-based trawler.

He made no plea during a brief appearance at Stornoway Sheriff Court on Thursday.

The case was continued for further inquiries.
