An islander has died in a house fire in Barra.

 

Fire fighters tackled the blaze in the dwelling house within a small housing scheme in the north of the island.

 

The alarm was raised around 6.15am.

 

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We can sadly confirm that a 51-year-old has died.

 

"The incident happened at a house at St Barr's Crescent.

 

“Scottish Fire and Rescue Service personnel also attended and the fire was extinguished.

 

"The man is yet to be formally identified but his next of kin have been made aware."

 

Inspector Roddy Mackay added: "A joint investigation with the fire service will be carried out and enquiries are at a very early stage."

 

Two fire crews were involved in the incident in the north part of Barra.

 

A fire crew summoned from Lochboisdale in South Uist travelled via ferry across the Sound of Barra ferry to the incident.

 

The joined the Castlebay crew at the incident.

 

The MV Loch Alainn made a special sailing for the emergency.
