A ban on people visiting patients in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness remains in place following an outbreak of the norovirus bug.

Some 37 people have symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Patients on ward 5C, 3A, 7C and 2C have been affected.

Visiting was suspended in an attempt to prevent further cases within the hospital, which is a main treatment centre for transferred island patients .

Dr Adam Brown, consultant microbiologist for NHS Highland, said: ““By reducing the amount of traffic coming in to the hospital we hope that will reduce the risk of any more outbreaks of Norovirus.

“We would ask members of the public not to come in to hospital to visit any ward unless by prior arrangement with the nurse in charge.

“Hospital staff will be very happy to talk to visitors on the phone so they can get updates on how their relatives are.”

Senior management bosses are reviewing the situation today.

Wards are to be deep cleaned after a clear two days from the last case of the illness.
