15-year-old airlifted to hospital               11/8/14

A 15-year-old Belgium girl has been airlifted to hospital after being injured on isolated sand dunes in the Western Isles.

The girl, believed to be on an organised youth camp trip, fractured her ankle on the sandy machair on the north coast of Berneray, off North Uist.

Vehicles could not get near the casualty due to the terrain and the Stornoway coastguard helicopter was summoned after the accident around noon on Sunday.

Volunteer coastguards from Griminish and paramedics went to her aid until the aircraft flew her to hospital in Stornoway.

She was treated at the accident and emergency unit and was later discharged. Accompnaied by an adult she was driven south through Lewis and Harris to catch the Sunday evening ferry to Uist.
