Well over 500 social housing homes - about a quarter of the total - across the Western Isles have been damaged by the recent storms.

Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP) which runs the council’s former housing stock says around 150 houses experienced “very significant damage.”

These are are now prioritised for repairs.

Most affected properties have been made safe and measure put in place to try and prevent rain penetration.

HHP said the continuing windy weather is seriously preventing permanent roof repair work.

Gales and hailstorms makes it “unsafe for operatives to work on the majority of roofs,” said the agency.

HHP officers are continuing to inspect homes and to visit tenants to check on their welfare and to offer assistance.

Over 50 personnel are busy repairing damage and are ready to carry out permanent repairs damage once the weather improves.

David Blaney, chair of HHP said: “We have experienced one of the worst storms in many years and have suffered extensive damage.

“We would assure tenants that we are treating this with the greatest priority and are deploying all available resources to repair tenant’s homes quickly as the weather permits.’
